2007 Corvair Wings and Wheels in Alliance, OH (2D1)

2007 Corvair Wings and Wheels in Alliance, OH (2D1)

Barber field consists of two crossing grass fields, north/south and east/west.

There were some gorgeous homebuilts there, as well as four KRs.

Pete Klapp showed off his Corvair engine case and a cylinder boring jig. This was inside EAA 82's workshop, a house trailer converted to shop use.

This Corvair had 63,000 miles on it, and was totally original! The guy who bought it new sold it 15 years ago, and when that owner died, he bought it back for what he sold it for earlier, so basically the guy stored it for him for 15 years for free!

Four KRs flew in, two of them Corvair powered.

Tim Alt (left) brought his 140 hp Corvair powered trike, which sports a Porsche transaxle and custom "everything". Forrest Barber takes it for a spin.

This makes my blood run a little cooler!

Joe Horton showed us his nosegear strut at the point of failure. It looks like a void in the center of it to me.

Joe's 3100cc Corvair engine was outstanding.

Larry Flesner gave us a sneak preview of the new 2007 KR Gathering T-shirt.

Joseph Snow (flaming hat) brought his Q2 Corvair installation to show it off and ask for few opinions.

Ken Jones hand props his A65 powered KR2 as he heads home to Porkopolis.

Joe showed off his KR with a high speed fly-by on his way out. I know he wished he had a spinner on his plane, but he did great just getting there after his nose gear failure only three weeks ago. Check out the shine on the bottom of his wing.

Larry educated some KR builders on composite tricks that he learned while building his KR.

This Piet did a lot of flying while we were there.

Larry and I did a little flying also.

Ron Willett showed me his KR2S project, which shows a lot of thought and some real craftsmanship.

I also got to see Pete Klapp's KR2S, which have some unique features that'll make it a real head turner.

On the way home Larry and I dropped into Lee Bottom for a "Sinful Sundae", and met Ken Jones there as well. This was a tough little airport, with a mountain on one side and a river on the other, and obstructions on both ends. I managed to use only about half the runway landing, so I was happy. Almost all of the planes there were classic taildraggers, and not an ugly one among them. The ice cream is served off the front porch of the only house on the field, along with lemonade.

Here's another example, a nice Gullwing Stinson.

It was another great KR/Corvair trip. I did 169 mph TAS on the way up at 11,500' while burning 5.0 gph, which is 35 mpg, as I was trying to make up for lost time for leaving late due to fog. I parked the plane with 454 hours on it, and brought home a "longest distance flown" award...
