Gene Knight's Twin KR2 N722M, with Centerline Thrust

Gene Knight's Twin KR2 N722M, with Centerline Thrust

Updated June 2022

Gene Knight built a twin engine KR2, recently (June 2022) for sale on Barnstormers. When registering with the FAA, he labeled the model as "22 Magnum". It was first registered in 2013, using a Revmaster and a VW engine in a pusher/puller configuration, ala Cessna Skymaster. I visited him in Mississippi while it was under construction in 2010, and then again in June 2022. See below....

Wing tank filler cap, with fuel level sensor aft of it, so it's replaceable, unlike most KRs.

This is a replica of the Mooney main gear, taken from Gene's Mooney. There's a dimensioned drawing for it in his "22 Magnum" notebook (photo is further down).

In June of 2022, Gene posted the plane for sale on Barnstormers, so I returned again to take more photos of the completed plane. It has flown, but

The canopy hinge has a cover that retracts when the canopy is open

The interior is covered in thin soft leather. Gene never got around to finishing the installation, but has more of the same leather to finish the job.

This is the Jabiru engine installed as the aft engine, because it's lighter than the VW that was there previously. The goal was to increase the usable CG range. Another option is to extend the forward engine two inches farther forward.

The radio is temporarily removed.

The VW cowling needs some modification to finish the Jabiru installation. There is a more to the rear cowling, but it is removed in this photo because it fit the VW, but not quite the Jabiru.

Aft fuel tank filler.

Jumper/charge port.

Behind this center panel is a 5 gallon "reserve" fuel tank, with elevation to gravity feed the carburetors, if needed. Filler port is outside

"work in progress" pile of parts, including aft cowling for the VW engine, exhaust pipes, spinner, oil cooler shroud, Jabiru cooling shrouds, etc.

More of the aft VW engine shroud.

This notebook is packed with drawings that Gene created during construction, detailing various subsystems such as the landing gear, electrical system, overall dimensions, vertical and horiz. stabilizers, booms, etc, as well as manuals and data sheets for various components in the panel and elsewhere.

The plane was completed, and has flown once, but Gene decided he'd swap the rear VW engine out for a lighter Jabiru to move the CG more forward. Life happens, and it's been several years now, and the Jabiru engine swap is still not complete, and Gene recognizes that other priorities preclude him from flying it, and decided to sell it as is. Really, the CG range can be improved upon by extending the engine mount and cowling a few inches further forward, even using the original aft VW engine, which is included with the sale, along with the cowling that covers it, and the prop that fits it.

Gene's farm has a 16'wide runway on it (14MS Rose Field Airport, Hickory, MS), which I somehow managed to land and takeoff on in N56ML without issue. This is a bit scary, but the asphalt is flush with the ground, so even if you run off the asphalt, it's not a big deal unless it's a wet mushy-ground day.
